Un vecchio detto dei tennisti  ..
Seguono i bis.

An old saying among tennis players goes: “to win, you have to hit hard and on the lines.” The say (slightly adapted) could well apply to Khandohi, who plays almost always loudly and at maximum speed. He belongs to that group of muscular young performers who do not interpret music but rather assault it, as if it were a fortress to be conquered. Fine: but where are the music, its meaning, its artistic value? That is what anyone listening to Khandohi inevitably asks. The concert begins with a Chopin nocturne, initially taken at an exasperatingly slow tempo, but after just a few bars “the warrior spirit roaring within him” (to quote Alfieri) breaks loose, and the poor nocturne is bombarded with utterly excessive sonorities that turn it into a (thunderous) “diurnal.” From the same composer comes the Second Sonata. Here, the excessive speed in the first movement distorts the musical meaning of the piece. The second movement is somewhat better (though still marred by the same stylistic errors), as is the Funeral March. The fourth movement, however—dark and elusive by nature—is unacceptable: the unison between the two hands never finds the necessary balance. He should listen to Benedetti Michelangeli’s recording to understand how it ought to be played. We then move on to Liszt, with the Réminiscences of Norma. Perhaps one of Liszt’s least successful paraphrases, essentially focused almost entirely on the opera’s finale (“Donna celeste”), while forgetting its most beautiful and famous aria, Casta diva. The interpretative approach does not change. The pianist’s steel‑forged octaves are there—but little else. The same can be said of the convoluted Rachmaninov Sonata, rightly seldom performed because of its unevenness (and frankly, the Faust the composer claims to depict is not easy to discern). Then come the encores. I listened only to the first two, having already formed a clear idea of the performer. But even the choice of encores reveals a pianist’s intelligence: one cannot offer only virtuosic pieces (such as the Danse macabre) and of considerable length. Granted, I have not forgotten that in 1979 Pollini in London played Beethoven’s entire Op. 81 Les adieux as an encore—but that was Pollini at the height of his success). The pursuit of easy success with an undoubtedly unsophisticated audience comes at the expense of an artist’s intelligence (to whom I would also suggest greater composure during performances). The comparison with the excellent pianist who preceded him in the series — Izik‑Dzurko — would be merciless.
PS I would kindly ask the readers of this blog to  register  (which implies nothing) which can be easily made  by “clicking” the black square above each post. By so doing they will receive an e-mail message whenever a new post is published.
PS A “blogger” is not an oracle and inevitably makes errors (the minimum possible..). I often receive “corrections” not always fundamental and not always accurate. Just as I submit myself to the judgement of others with the name and surname so those who want to have the goodness to report errors or inaccuracies will have to do so only by sending a comment: everyone has his own responsibility.
