Mario Brunello..
Note al limite superiore dell’estensione, passaggi di grande agilità, doppie note in capotasto etc.

Mario Brunello is a familiar figure to Bologna audiences, ever since he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986, one of the world’s most prestigious music competitions, although today it has unfortunately lost part of its significance because of the boycott associated with the war in Ukraine. During the forty years that have elapsed since that victory, he has lost none of his artistry, not only preserving his extraordinary cello technique but also broadening his repertoire, both in terms of the scores he performs and the instruments he plays. The cello, regrettably, has a relatively limited literature compared to other instruments, largely because of its historical development. To Brunello’s credit is also his ongoing effort to promote interest in an instrument that, at least in Italy, still does not receive the attention it deserves. This concert should be viewed in that light. The programme featured a concerto by a twentieth-century composer who, although admired by figures such as Shostakovich, has only recently begun to appear with any regularity in classical concert programming. It is worth remembering that a number of his works have also served as soundtracks for well-known films. Wejnberg’s musical language remains firmly within the tonal tradition, enriched by frequent references to folk and ethnic melodies. The Cello Concerto performed by Brunello deserves far greater recognition than it has so far received. Far removed from the twentieth century’s avant-garde trends, it is woven from music of outstanding quality. The work demands a first-rate cello technique, encompassing virtually every challenge the instrument can offer: notes at the very top of its range, passages requiring exceptional agility, double stops in thumb position, and much more. Brunello delivered a truly masterful interpretation. Particularly interesting was his frequent choice to play in the upper register of the fourth string, the C string, perhaps for reasons of timbre, even in passages that could easily have been performed in the lower positions of the third string, the G string. As an encore, he appropriately chose a Wejnberg Prelude dedicated to Shostakovich, a piece that, had Brunello not identified it, could easily have been mistaken for an authentic work by Shostakovich himself. The second half of the concert was devoted to Bruckner’s First Symphony in the Linz version. Here, unfortunately, I must confess my longstanding difficulty with the Austrian composer. His music often strikes me as burdened by a fear of never saying enough, piling one theme upon another in ways that are not always entirely consequential. Unsurprisingly, the most successful movement is the celebrated Scherzo, brilliant, energetic, and full of momentum.Chauan is a young conductor blessed with highly expressive, at times even excessive, gestures. Nevertheless, he offered a performance of Bruckner of considerable quality, leading the Teatro Comunale Orchestra to yet another level of excellence. Over the years, this ensemble has steadily gained authority, stature, and artistic value. The concert was rewarded with a warm and enthusiastic public response.

PS A “blogger” is not an oracle and inevitably makes errors (the minimum possible..). I often receive “corrections” not always fundamental and not always accurate. Just as I submit myself to the judgement of others with the name and surname so those who want to have the goodness to report errors or inaccuracies will have to do so only by sending a comment: everyone has his own responsibility.
