… naturalizzato americano nel 1989, approda a Bologna dopo un quinquennio Yefim Bronfman, con un programma che più classico non si può. Questa icona del pianismo mondiale esegue un concerto che si può senza mezzi definire insoddisfacente a cominciare dal taglio della prima sonata di Beethoven (l’op.22) prevista nel programma iniziale e sostituito dal breve notturno chopiniano. Il concerto dura quindi poco più di 60 minuti, una durata assolutamente insufficiente per gli standard vigenti. Naturalmente non è la durata che determina la qualità di un concerto ma certo la sua contrazione (a parità di cachet…) non depone a favore della serietà dell’esecutore. E non sono i due brevi bis finali a cambiare la situazione. Quanto alla esecuzione la si può paragonare a un soprammobile levigato ma senza una particolare caratterizzazione. Tecnicamente senza macchia tutte le esecuzioni appaiono prive di mordente, quasi attutite dall’assenza di quelle dinamiche sonore certamente necessarie nell’op. 57 di Beethoven ma ancor più nell’op. 58 di Chopin.  Manca nell’esecuzione quella vitalità che rende una esecuzione memorabile. Volendo fare un paragone (ardito ma per me accettabile) l’esecuzione di Bronfman ricorda in modo traslato quella dell’ultimo Schiff che a forza di rarefare il suo pianismo diventa alla fine persino un po’ noioso. E a riprova del tutto, il successo presso il pubblico è stato tutt’altro che travolgente. Si sa che a mio giudizio molto spesso il pubblico non ha le capacità di valutare appieno le qualità di un esecutore ma questa volta almeno a sensazione ha colpito nel segno.  E’ noto che ritengo le presentazioni prima del concerto un’ingiustificata manifestazione di provincialismo musicale ma almeno questa volta la qualità della conversazione è stata accettabile.

This icon of world pianism holds a concert that can be defined without restrictions as unsatisfactory starting with the cutting of Beethoven’s first sonata (Op.22) provided in the initial program and replaced by the short Chopin nocturne. The concert therefore lasts just over 60 minutes, a duration absolutely insufficient for the current standards Of course it is not the duration that determines the quality of a concert but certainly its contraction (with the same cachet …) does not speak in favour of the seriousness of the performer. And it is not the two short final encores that change the situation. As for the execution, it can be compared to a polished ornament but without a particular characterization. Technically flawless all the executions appear devoid of mordant, almost muffled by the absence of those sound dynamics certainly necessary in the op. 57 by Beethoven but even more so in op. 58 by Chopin.  The execution lacks that vitality that makes a performance unforgettable.  As a comparison (bold but acceptable to me) Bronfman’s performance is reminiscent in a translated way of that of the last Schiff who by dint of rarefying his pianism becomes in the end even a little boring. And as proof of the whole, the success with the public was far from overwhelming. It is known that in my opinion very often the public does not have the ability to fully evaluate the qualities of a performer but this time at least a sensation has hit the mark.  It is well known that I consider the presentations before the concert an unjustified manifestation of musical provincialism but at least this time the quality of the conversation was acceptable.
