Rusalka – La scala 22 Giugno 2023

Reduce da un’insopportabile “Forza del destino” a Bologna Rusalka è stata una bellissima sorpresa.
Difficile da raccontare in breve le sensazioni che l’opera riesce a dare: i costumi rendono appieno l’atmosfera di fiaba (bellissima la trovata delle ninfe che eseguono figure del nuoto sincronizzato) e sia la presentazione di Rusalka con tentacoli a mo’ di piovra, sia quella di Vodnik, re del mondo acquoreo con le braccia smisurate, sia quella della maga Jezibaba, (deus ex machina dell’intero svolgimento della favola) imponente e allo stesso tempo severa sono perfettamente inseriti nelle scene dell’opera. Per le quali va dato un plauso del tutto speciale sia per la prima (e la terza), imponente e austera, sia per la seconda, una sorta di sipario con foglie dal quale emergono (prima non individuabili) e si staccano i folletti addobbati con fogliame. I protagonisti si muovono in un mondo fatato, popolato da creature immaginarie che cambiano via via secondo lo svolgimento del libretto che forse non è un capolavoro – forti riminiscenze dei fratelli Grimm – ma che a fronte di alcuni obbrobri del melodramma italiano dell’800 diventa per converso un capolavoro.
Naturalmente Dvořák è fortemente influenzato da Wagner e l’apertura dell’opera ricorda molto da vicino l’inizio del Rheingold con tre ninfe che attirano dispettosamente e senza mai concedersi Vodnik (che appare l’Alberich di turno).
Ma per rappresentare con successo Rusalka è necessaria un’organizzazione di prim’ordine come quella della Scala.
Ottima la direzione di Tomáš Hanus e di tutto il cast, con un plauso particolare a Elena Guseva, nel ruolo della principessa straniera, voce potente e drammatica. Meno positiva la prova del tenore Dmitry Korchak nel ruolo del principe, che non nasconde alcuni limiti di emissione. Molto brava e perfettamente nella parte Olga Bezsmertna come Rusalka che risolve brillantemente alcuni passaggi vocalmente molto impegnativi. Un meritatissimo successo di pubblico. Rusalka sarà trasmessa il 19 ottobre 2023, ore 21.15 su Rai 5.

Così come io mi sottopongo al giudizio altrui con nome e cognome così chi vorrà avere la bontà di segnalarmi eventuali errori o imprecisioni dovrà farlo unicamente mandando un commento: a ognuno la propria responsabilità. After an unbearable “Forza del destino” in Bologna this Rusalka at La Scala is like a breath of spring. An imaginative direction by Emma Dante that perfectly renders the fairytale atmosphere of the libretto. Here everything is perfect: the lights, the scenes, the music, the costumes. A production at the height of the best Scala, rightly rewarded by a large audience – despite the heat and not perfect air conditioning – and by a 5-stars success (and unjustly relegated – as a review in the Sole24 ore – in a shoulder blurb). This Rusalka is the epitome of what I mean by opera, a SHOW in which all the components merge into an amalgam of perfect balance that transmits to the spectators the deep meaning of the composition. It is difficult to tell in short the sensations that the work gives: the costumes fully render the fairytale atmosphere (beautiful the invention of the nymphs who perform figures of synchronized swimming) and the presentation of Rusalka with tentacles like an octopus, that of Vodnik, king of the watery world with huge arms, and that of the sorceress Jezibaba, (deus ex machina of the entire plot) imposing and at the same time severe are perfectly inserted in the scenes of the opera. For which a very special applause must be given both for the first (and the third), imposing and austere, and for the second, a sort of curtain with leaves from which emerge (previously unidentifiable) goblins decorated with foliage The protagonists move in a fairy world, populated by imaginary creatures that gradually change according to the development of the libretto that perhaps is not a masterpiece – strong reminiscences of the brothers Grimm – but that in the face of some opprobrium of the Italian melodrama of the eighteenth becomes conversely a masterpiece. Of course Dvořák is strongly influenced by Wagner and the opening of the opera closely resembles the beginning of Rheingold with three nymphs who attract spitefully and without ever indulging Vodnik (who behaves like Alberich). Rusalka is rightly a very successful opera in the Czech theaters. But to adequately emphasize the music (beautiful but not always) it is necessary a great choreography like that of La Scala. Excellent direction of Tomáš Hanus and of all the cast, with particular praise to Elena Guseva, in the role of the foreign princess, powerful and dramatic voice. Less positive is the performance of the tenor Dmitry Korchak in the role of the prince, who does not hide some emission limits. Very good and perfectly in the part Olga Bezsmertna as Rusalka who brilliantly solves some very demanding vocal passages. A well-deserved success with the public.
